Presented by Indesign Group and in conjunction with Brisbane Indesign, Queensland New Design is a bi-annual exhibition that highlights the finest new products developed exclusively by Queensland’s top design talent. Complementing the exhibition, a number of events provide finalists with the opportunity to gain valuable insight and advice, and form relationships with key industry figures.

The program involves a judging panel handpicking entries for a shortlist of prototypes, which are presented at a ‘Pitch to Peers’ event. Finalists selected from this shortlist then have their products showcased in the month-long QND exhibition, gaining maximum exposure at artisan, a key location at Brisbane Indesign.

A Commercial Development Series invites all QND entrants to attend design seminars, with speakers chosen for their relevant industry expertise. A networking and awards evening then brings together finalists, industry figures, Brisbane Indesign showroom participants and media together, in a spirit of mentoring and networking.

The inaugural QND exhibition last year was a fantastic success, with the calibre of the 12 finalists setting the bar for the next exhibition in 2010.

Entry

Entry is eligible for those born in Queensland, or currently residing there. During the submission process, entrants must provide a photocopy of a valid document (driver’s license, birth certificate, utility bill) in support of this. Submissions are accepted for furniture, lighting and interior accessories, and the equivalent outdoor products in these categories are also eligible for entry. Entrants can submit a maximum of two (2) products/prototypes.

Judging

The QND judging process involves a number of stages, beginning with hard copy entries being reviewed by a judging panel for selection into a shortlist. At this point the entries are anonymous, until the ‘Pitch to Peers’ live judging event where entrants give a brief presentation on their prototype/product, to explain the philosophy behind it.

Following this event, judges convene to select the final products to be included in the QND showcase. The judging panel for 2007 included David Granger (Bang Design), Kevin Jarrett (Space Furniture), Michael Rayber (Cox Rayner Architects), Kirsti Simpson (Hassell) and Jane Sorby (HBO+EMTB)
